How Can I Be Better?

Updated: Aug 7, 2021

This seems like a near-impossible question to answer!...

Many times we have goals we'd like to reach, dreams we'd like to make realities, and habits we'd love to kill and leave behind!... But it is not a simple feat to attain, achieve, or succeed.

Marc Schwantes of INC.com writes about the statistic that 92% of people do not reach their New Year's Resolution goals. He said "Simply put, the 8 percent of goal-setters who succeed want it, and badly. So ask yourself: What is my level of commitment? Are you totally sold out for reaching your goal? When obstacles pop up along the way, will you toss in the towel? The 8 percent have an internal compass that keeps them locked in until they reach the top of the mountain. It's a belief system of "do whatever it takes" that is intrinsically motivated at their core."

So what is the first step? Well, many studies show that our tendencies to try and do things alone lead us to fail more times than not. Failure is an interesting, and unfortunately, poorly understood word. The word "failure" seems to imply an end of all things... yet, there is no absolute failure. This is all in your head... You do not have to stop trying. There is nothing in this world that you cannot TRY again in someway or another.

To put it accurately, it is not the failing that we fear... it is the "trying again" that defeats most people... Many state and federal exams to receive the credentials to practice a profession require a long waiting period after one failed attempt; songs are written, reviewed, rearranged, recorded, mixed, mastered, then distributed to the public; structures are built meticulously, over an extended period of time with almost no room for error: art is manifested technically and creatively sacrificing money, blood, sweat, tears, time, and risking rejection by public opinion; relationships lead to heartache, pain, sunshine, rain, happiness, anger, fear, and hours of time and investments made in hopes to see them grow; pregnancy... well... let's not get started on that...

These are just 6 examples above that thousands of people try arduously to build, complete, or gain in this life... and it's obvious why they do not want to try again, and again, and again... Most of the time, this is what keeps us from succeeding.

However Schwantes says one of the keys to YOUR success is other people. Accountability is not something that we talk about enough. Watch this video about accountability and consider what you might need to do to see some great victories in your professional or personal life to achieve more and be better!
